Matt started his career as an Assistant District Attorney in a two-lawyer office in the mountains of northern New Mexico, where he got an up-close look at the considerable array of legal issues affecting small town America.
Thanks to his mentorship under a 25-year veteran, he was then able to move to Las Cruces near the U.S.-Mexico border to work as an Assistant Attorney General specializing in money laundering and asset forfeiture litigation. In addition to teaching the intricacies of New Mexico’s statutes to state and federal law enforcement agents, financial institution employees, and other lawyers, with only three years’ experience as a practicing attorney, Matt led the prosecution team to four successful jury trial convictions against the “AZ Boys” drug trafficking organization on racketeering, money laundering, and a host of other charges–including the predicate RICO offenses of arson, bribery, and murder.
In 2015, Matt turned his attention to one of his main interests–the securities and financial services industry–prosecuting administrative and criminal securities fraud cases for the New Mexico Securities Division. As has happened multiple times in his career, he stepped up when no one else would, this time in 2016 to shepherd the $11 million Santa Fe real estate fraud and embezzlement matter State of New Mexico v. William Kalinowski to a successful conclusion via jury verdict.
Always eager to expand his skill set, he moved to Denver to represent the Colorado Securities and Banking Commissioners in the state’s Department of Law. The move proved prescient and enabled him to handle the first initial coin offering securities enforcement cases in Colorado after the crypto bubble collapsed in 2018.
After a successful tenure in Colorado, Matt returned to New Mexico in 2019 at the behest of the Governor to serve as the Director of the Securities Division. Frustrated by the slow and outdated bureaucracy of state government, however, he soon transitioned to the private sector, subsequently handling FINRA arbitrations and business litigation at the Albuquerque firm Marrs Griebel Ltd. Finally, on the advice of his trusted friends, he decided to open his own outfit.
Today, the firm is a modern boutique by any measure, comprising distinctive specialty practice areas, a technology-forward approach, and an exclusive client base spanning Colorado, Georgia, and New Mexico.
The firm’s key areas remain administrative law, securities, digital asset regulation, professional licensure, and small-to-mid-size business litigation. However, it has since expanded its offerings to promote government accountability through public records, civil rights, and constitutional litigation as well.
